SIGN LAB™ Workshop

Four weeks to build a Substack people recognize, remember and choose.

SIGN LAB™ — Launches January 18th, 2027

If you’re new here, I’m Jessica.

Something in my publication stopped you. Maybe a line, maybe an image. Either way, you’re here.

Your writing is probably good. People who find you like it.

But does your publication stick? Or do readers enjoy a post, close the tab, and forget whose it was by dinner?

Most publications are built by the unspoken rules of their niche: the same topics, the same formats, the same look and the same promises as everyone else writing about whatever you write about. More volume just puts that sameness in front of more people.

Your Substack doesn’t need more posts. It needs a stronger signal.

SIGN LAB
™ is a four-week workshop where you build it.

One lab a week. Each lab has short video lessons, a workbook and one clear deliverable. By the end, you have a Signal Blueprint for your whole publication: what it argues, who it’s for, how it sounds and how it looks.

You come out knowing: “This is the argument my publication exists to make, and this is why the right reader comes back.”

What’s in it

Lab 1: Stance
What argument does your publication exist to make?

A topic isn’t a position. Readers forget a list of subjects but they will remember an argument. You find the advice your niche repeats that you refuse to repeat, and build your publication around it.

You leave with: your Publication Stance Statement and an editorial filter for deciding what to write and what to skip.

Lab 2: Identity
Who sees their own experience inside your publication?

You stop writing for “writers and creatives” and start writing for a reader you could pick out of a crowd, defined by what they believe and what frustrates them, not their job title.

You leave with: your Reader Worldview Profile. Not a fictional reader with a name, an age and a coffee order.

Lab 3: Grit
What does your publication sound like when it stops trying to sound like a newsletter?

You strip out the category clichés, the borrowed openers and the safe phrasing, and find a voice that’s already yours.

You leave with your Voice With Bite Guide: voice rules, a banned-phrase list, the signature messages you’ll keep coming back to, and headline patterns that sound like you.

Lab 4: Nerve
What should make someone recognize your publication before they read your name?

A different image for every post isn’t a visual identity. You decide which conventions in your niche to keep, which to break, and what visual world your writing deserves.

You leave with your Creative Contrast Brief: a visual concept, creative rules, a list of aesthetic no’s, and a direction for your covers, header and Notes graphics.

The Signal Blueprint

At the end, it all comes together on one page: what your publication challenges, who it’s for, how it sounds, how it looks, what belongs in it, and why someone should subscribe.

How it works

  • One lab released every Monday, starting 18 January

  • Three to five short videos per lab, five to eight minutes each

  • One workbook section and one assignment per lab

  • Every Saturday, a live Q&A to go through your questions and your work. Send them in ahead through a form, or ask live. Can’t make it? The recording lands in your inbox the same day.

This is for you if

  • your writing is better than your publication looks

  • every post has a different image style, and none of them look like you

  • you’ve changed your header, colours or fonts more than once this year, and it still doesn’t feel right

  • you can’t explain in one sentence why someone should subscribe

  • you write about several things but have no clear centre

  • your voice goes generic the moment you try to sound like an expert

  • you’re ready to make decisions, narrow things down and do the work yourself

It’s not for you if you want guaranteed subscriber growth, viral Notes templates, or Substack platform tutorials. SIGN LAB™ gives you a publication worth growing. The tactics come after.

Who’s teaching it

I’m Jessica, a certified brand strategist and designer, and I’m the founder of RebelArketype Studio.

I built S.I.G.N.A.L.™ to turn good work into a brand people recognize, remember and choose. SIGN LAB™ applies its first four pillars to your publication. My own publication is small, and I’m building it with this exact method, in public. You’ll watch every decision as I make it.

What it costs

SIGN LAB™ is included in the annual membership, along with the full S.I.G.N.A.L™ library, the Copy Killer and the Brand Lens.

Founding members join at half price and keep that price for as long as they stay. The founding price ends on 10 January. SIGN LAB™ starts 18 January.

FAQs

Do I need a big audience?
No. SIGN LAB™ works on the publication, not the numbers. It’s actually easier to build your signal before you grow than after.

Is this a Substack growth course?
No. It’s brand strategy for your publication. Growth gets easier once people can tell you apart, and that’s what you’re building here.

How much time does it take?
About two to three hours a week, including the videos and the workbook.

What if I fall behind?
Every lab stays available for as long as you’re a member. Catch up when life allows.

What if I fall behind?
Every lab stays available for as long as you’re a member. Catch up when life allows.

Can monthly members join?
SIGN LAB™ is included with annual membership only. If you’re on monthly, you can switch to annual at the founding price until 10 January.

What happens after the four weeks?
Your membership continues, with the full S.I.G.N.A.L.™ library, the Copy Killer and the Brand Lens.

What if it’s not for me?
Because SIGN LAB™ and the membership are digital and available the moment you join, I don’t offer refunds.

But I’d rather you join sure than join hopeful. So before you decide, do the free Sameness Autopsy. If it makes you think “this is exactly my problem,” SIGN LAB™ is the next step. If it doesn’t, save your money. And if you’re still not sure, reply to any of my emails with your question. I’ll tell you honestly whether SIGN LAB™ is right for you, even if the answer is no.

Can I cancel?
Your membership renews once a year, and you can cancel the renewal anytime in your Substack settings.

You can keep writing good posts that people enjoy and forget by dinner. Or you can spend four weeks building a publication they’d recognize with your name covered.

SIGN LAB™ starts 18 January. The founding price ends 10 January.
